Welcome to my blog! My name is Allyson Whipple, and I wear many hats. I currently work in education while pursuing various creative endeavors. Primarily a poet, I’m also at work on a number of fiction projects at any given time. I’ve been studying dance since I was eight, and currently compete in west coast swing events. In addition to dance, I recently started studying kung fu, which I love more every day.  I also enjoy photography and baking the perfect loaf of bread. On top of that, I love adventure. Whether I’m visiting a new state or exploring Texas in greater detail, I relish the chance to visit, learn, and experience something new.

A brief history: I was born and raised in Ohio, graduating with a B.A. in English from Kenyon College in 2006. In 2008, I received my M.A. in English from Case Western Reserve University. Soon after graduation, my husband Jon and I moved to Austin, Texas, where we continue to live. We currently have a small menagerie consisting of nine degus and two dogs.

Things I dislike: bigotry in all forms, confrontation, the industrialization of healthcare, snow, the state of the food industry, willful ignorance

Things I like: avocados, Birkenstocks, brunch, cheese, convertibles, cowboy boots, credit unions, dancing, feminism, poker, smartphones, spreadsheets (especially color-coded ones), tacos, tea, Texas

About this blog: I’ve had various blog projects since 2006, all of which have fallen by the wayside. Then, in 2010, I started Literary Austin, a blog about writing culture in my city. As my own writing life began to develop, I began to want to chronicle my experiences, but Literary Austin was not the place for personal ramblings, so I started up this blog. I mostly discuss my writing life, but also enjoy chronicling travels both near and far. I even might get a little political from time to time. Sometimes, I just need to speak up about the issues that matter.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to your comments. And if you want to contact me off the blog, feel free to shoot me an email at literaryaustin@gmail.com.
